Haworthiopsis attenuata

Haworthiopsis attenuata, Coega Kop

Haworthiopsis attenuata Haw.

attenuata: tapering leaves.

H. attenuata is a well known species, which occupy many of window sills. It is very proliferous species, forming large clumps in nature. But also it is an attractive species with leaves covered with white tubercles on the both sides of leave - this is also one of the difference from H. fasciata. Others are - leaves are longer, thinner, more spreading with white tubercles and the leaves have no fibres.

Distribution map

H. attenuata grows from Hankey in the west to Fish River in the east. In Hankey it co-occurs with H. attenuata var. radula. In the past were many differents forms and variets of H. attenuata described - for example H. attenuata forma clariperla - with large white confluent tubercles in bands across the back of the leaves. The origin should be somewhere near Fort Brown. The other well known form, H. attenuata forma britteniana, was collected in Plutosvale and is recognized by its many large white discrete tubercles. Although it is a very common species in cultivation and it grows on quite large distribution area, it isn´t easy to find them in the nature.

H. attenuata grows easily in cultivation and propagation can by done by offsetts.

I have atleast 10 haworthia's that I keep. Some of them are 9 inches tall. Every year I take their new sprouts off. I root them and give them away to friends and co-workers. I never knew the name of the plant, until I researched it and saw pictures. Just wanted to say, nice site... great pictures and information.

I plan to pollinate my H attenuata, but i can't find in the net tips on pollination. I also have difficulty knowing which is the stigma and where are the pollens, they seem to be all petals. Thank you.
